Chinese authorities are considering easing export restrictions to permit major AI firms such as Alibaba and ByteDance to purchase Nvidia’s RTX Pro 5500 graphics cards, a gaming‑oriented chip released roughly five years ago, for use in AI servers. Sources indicate ByteDance may order up to one million of these units, a volume that would guarantee Nvidia two quarters of projected sales and help revive a market where its share of advanced AI chips fell from about 95 % to zero under Biden‑era controls. The RTX Pro 5500s would be deployed in configurations of eight chips per server to support large‑scale model training. Nvidia is preparing to ship the first batch in December, following a period in the first half of 2026 during which unsold H200 inventory caused a $400 million revenue shortfall. Earlier, Trump had tightened restrictions on H200 exports but later lifted them after consulting with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, a move Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as aligning the president with Huang’s advice. While Nvidia argues that releasing the older chips benefits U.S. firms hampered by current limits, analysts warn that increased sales to China could divert critical chip supplies from domestic data centers that rely on newer hardware for frontier AI research.
