CERN and Mistral have signed a statement of intent to form a long‑term strategic partnership aimed at creating foundation models for scientific discovery, beginning with high‑energy physics. The collaboration will produce a single pretrained Large Physics Model (LPM), a foundation model tailored for collider physics, trained on billions of simulated proton‑proton collisions from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This model is designed to handle multiple tasks—reconstructing collision events, identifying particles, flagging anomalous signals, and evaluating prospective detector designs—thereby addressing the current reliance on a chain of specialized algorithms. The effort combines CERN’s expertise in fundamental physics, its petabyte‑scale data archives (≈1 EB of LHC data, soon to grow tenfold with the HL‑LHC around 2030), and large‑scale computing infrastructure with Mistral’s leadership in training large‑scale AI models. “High‑energy physics offers a uniquely rigorous environment for AI development,” said Enrica Porcari, CERN’s CIO, while Johannes Brandstetter, Mistral’s VP of AI for Engineering, highlighted the goal of pushing the frontiers of particle physics through advanced AI capabilities that can be shared across the broader scientific community. The partnership positions European excellence in AI and fundamental science to drive a new generation of tools capable of handling the scale, precision, and complexity of modern research worldwide.
