Hex is a local-first voice dictation application built in Rust, currently available for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 15+, with beta support for Windows 10/11 (x64/ARM64) and Linux (x86_64/ARM64 on X11 and wlroots Wayland). Users hold a shortcut (default Option on macOS, Ctrl+Space on Windows) to record; transcription runs entirely on-device using downloaded models such as Whisper and Parakeet, eliminating the need for cloud services for standard dictation. On macOS and Windows x64 with Vulkan drivers, Parakeet Unified English streams transcription, delivering text within ~100 ms of release; ARM64 and Linux fall back to CPU processing. The app integrates via Accessibility permissions to paste into the focused application and offers Modes for corrections, application-specific behavior, and optional text transformations. An optional OpenCode V2 beta integration enables post-processing rewriting, sending transcripts, foreground app context, and Brave browser hostnames to a configured model provider. An Annotate feature (Option-Shift-S on macOS, F9 on Linux) records screen drawing and voice, packaging keyframes, drawings, and transcripts for clipboard paste or OpenCode sessions. History retains pasted text for seven days by default (capped at 10,000 entries/16 MiB), storing no audio, full URLs, or window titles. Advanced users can define deterministic TypeScript/JavaScript transformations via ~/.config/hex/hex.config.ts, executed in an embedded JS engine with no filesystem or network access. The macOS binary exposes read-only CLI queries for history and meetings data. Distribution includes signed DMGs, Windows installers (unsigned, triggering SmartScreen), Linux .deb/.rpm/executables, Homebrew cask, and an Arch install script; auto-updates fetch from anoma.ly/release, while model downloads require huggingface.co access. Licensed MIT.
